Every Learner is Different | Janet’s Story
Janet has two children, and has recently got a Labrador puppy who has taken up lots of her free time!
Life before Brooks and Kirk
Janet has previously carried out assessments for ILM qualifications, and was marking assignments for the diplomas and certificates. She was also delivering training sessions.
After a number of years experience in the Leadership & Management world, Janet wanted to be able to offer training and assessment for apprenticeships in Leadership and Management, as Janet says this seems to be the way that training in this area is going. It was the appeal of apprenticeships and taking someone through an 18 month programme rather than the odd training session here and there that got Janet interested.
Finding Brooks and Kirk
Janet google searched to find Brooks and Kirk. She had a good look at our website and the blogs we have written, and also our reviews. One of the key things with us was that we provided access to learners for Janet to assess. At the time of her enrolment, the UK was in lockdown and so it was important for Janet that she could carry out her learning experience with us remotely.
“For me, it worked really well. The videos and the information that was provided, all the pointers enabled me to do it. I was fairly comfortable in the subject, and having been assessing for quite a while I felt quite comfortable with writing assignments. So, in some ways it was relatively straightforward for me.
But it was really interesting, because it was exactly the direction that I wanted to go in.
The feedback was great and the assignment marking was really quick, for any points that did need extra work the feedback was absolutely clear and really specific, you know – ‘we need you to do more on this, and it needs to look like that’. I knew exactly what to do to enabled me to pass the next time, so there wasn’t any back and forth with assignments it was really clear. The couple of times that I phoned in for some help or tips, someone was always available to help and give some really good advice to help me get back on track.
One thing which I use regularly now is lesson plans, and that’s a really valuable tool to help me think through exactly what the expectations are. I have actually kept the feedback section at the bottom, so I know what went well, what could be improved and what didn’t go so well. It definitely brought a lot of discipline into what I was doing, which has been really good.”
Review left on Trustpilot
It has been a couple of months since I completed my CAVA and AET course and I have just found out I have secured the perfect job.
Whilst the qualifications on my CV got me the interview it was the excellent knowledge and skills that I gained in completing the course with the team at Brooks & Kirk that got me the job. Dan was right the interview process did include a micro-teach so the lesson plan template and practice during the AET course was invaluable.
If anyone is considering taking these courses I highly recommend a chat with Brooks & Kirk.
Life after the Assessor Course
Janet is delivering ad hoc training sessions to other small businesses on behalf of Leeds council. She will be starting her first cohort in April 2022, and assesses on a freelance basis for a company in London. She is also involved in marking undergraduate work for a university.
Her plan is to move into End-Point Assessment in a few years time.
“From my perspective, I definitely think the way further education is going, apprenticeships will only get broader and the demand for assessors will go up, so I would say yes it’s a really good career route for people to go down. If you are looking at qualifications, I would absolutely recommend they speak to you [Brooks and Kirk].”
