Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement
“How do I become an NVQ Assessor?”
In order to become an Assessor, you need the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA). This NVQ Assessor qualification was previously known as the A1, and before that, the D32/33. The CAVA is the qualification you need if you wish to become an NVQ Assessor, On-Programme Assessor or End-Point Assessor (Apprenticeship Assessor) in your area of expertise.
You will also need to prove occupational competence in the area you want to assess in, in order to become an assessor in that industry. This can be proven with a number of years work experience, or accredited qualifications in that area. This is not an entry requirement for to enrol on the assessor qualification, but employers will require it from their assessors.
With Brooks and Kirk, you can enrol on the CAVA Assessor course today and start your journey to become an NVQ Assessor. It is not industry specific, so whether you’re in Hairdressing, Nursing, Dental Care, the Trades, or any sector whereby there are qualifications to be delivered, the CAVA assessor course is the one best for you.

Detailed Breakdown of the NVQ Assessor Course
The entire assessor training course typically takes around 5-6 months to complete, assuming a study commitment of a few hours per week. Throughout this duration, learners engage with the VLE, attend a study day, collaborate with fellow trainees, and receive ongoing support from tutors.
The course structure aims to provide a well-rounded learning experience that balances theoretical knowledge with practical application, preparing individuals to become competent and confident assessors.
Unit 1 – Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment
The first unit in the assessor training course focuses on developing a strong theoretical foundation. It covers the fundamental principles and practices of assessment, emphasising the role and responsibilities of an assessor. This unit is completed through a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) provided by Brooks and Kirk, the training provider. The VLE offers a variety of educational resources, such as videos and learning materials, to support learners in their assignments. Additionally, learners have access to unlimited tutor support, ensuring they receive guidance and assistance throughout the unit.
Unit 2 – Assess Occupational Competence in the Work Environment
Unit 2 concentrates on assessing learners in their actual work environments. To enhance practical understanding, a face-to-face study day is arranged at one of Brooks and Kirk’s offices located in London (Fulham), Manchester, Coventry, or Boston (Lincolnshire). During this study day, trainee assessors collaborate with up to four other learners and a tutor from Brooks and Kirk. This interactive session allows participants to apply their knowledge and receive expert guidance. Following the study day, written assignments related to the unit are completed on the VLE, similar to Unit 1.
Unit 3 – Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding
The final unit of the assessor training course focuses on assessing learners’ vocational skills, knowledge, and understanding within a learning environment. Similar to Unit 2, part of this unit is completed during the face-to-face study day, where trainee assessors work together with their peers and tutor. The remaining assignments associated with Unit 3 are subsequently completed on the VLE, ensuring a blended learning approach that combines practical experience with theoretical understanding.
