The odds are, we will all wake up on January 1st with an idea of a New Year’s Resolution (and maybe a slight headache and craving for greasy food). But by February 1st, it’s also very likely that we will have either forgotten or broken that resolution. In fact, over 80% of us are guaranteed to fail their New Year’s Resolution within the first 30 days of the year.
Where did New Year’s Resolutions come from?
Around 4000 years ago, the Ancient Babylonians were the first people to make New Year’s resolutions. They were the first to hold recorded celebrations in honour of the new year—though for them the year began in mid-March, when the crops were planted. At this time, they made promises to the gods to pay their debts and return any objects they had borrowed.
