Key Shifts Transforming Education
Spurred by the growth in digital technology, anyone can access the information they need on the go. This hasn’t just impacted the education sector, this digital transformation that we have undergone has changed our day-to-day lives too.
Learning is no longer restricted to the classroom, and there has also been less emphasis on teachers too. Online modules have meant that learners can work on their studies at their own pace, using videos rather than being taught directly. This has led to students becoming collaborators in their learning journeys as opposed to just receiving instructions from their teachers.
Personalised Learning
The more traditional forms of learning in a classroom environment has meant that all students have been subjected to the exact same level of teaching, no matter what their abilities. With the standardised lesson plans and grading system, the educational system has been very rigid for some time now.
The introduction of new digital technologies has meant that students are now able to learn in a way that suits them. There are lots of different types of learner, and some people may absorb more information through video content, whilst others may prefer interactive games. The introduction of distance learning has meant that learners have had more access to devices and programmes that work for their individual learning style.
Rise In Artificial Intelligence
AI and other new technologies are going to have a big influence on learning and education both this year and beyond. Learning will become more accessible, and even more bespoke for students as AI will help to create an experience tailored to that of the individual learner. Virtual reality is also something we will be seeing more of, and as this is a more engaged form of learning this will encourage students to participate more eagerly.
Improved Accessibility
Accessibility seems to have been one of the buzzwords for 2020, and there has been a big shift in making sure websites and online learning platforms are designed to be accessible. Whether students have disabilities or struggle to read, we have seen a rise in voice-text transcription within learning platforms, as well as an increase in audio-visual content.
New tech tools such as drawing boards and screen readers have really come into their own during this digital shift. Allowing more students to take part in subjects which rely on vision, such as Maths and Art. Those who live in remote locations have also seen the benefits of receiving education through video learning.
New Immersive Experiences
Experiential learning (learning through experience) helps to engage students more as they learn by ‘doing’. Of course during the pandemic this type of learning has not been possible, so there has been a shift towards immersive learning instead. This is focused more on giving students the opportunity to learn with the use of a simulated environment. Allowing them to feel fully immersed in the learning experience.
Lifelong Learning
As we continue to see technology used more both within the workplace and learning environments, students are going to need to adapt and be flexible when it comes to learning. This will only help them later on when they start applying for jobs, as many new future jobs have not even been invented yet.
There is definitely going to be a move away from the idea that you learn the skills for a single trade, and then you stay within that job or industry for life. People who have a wider range of skills and the willingness to learn on the job are going to be much more attractive prospects for potential employers.
