Why You Should Provide Training for Your Employees
Developing the skills of your employees will not only benefit them and help them improve their knowledge, but it will also help your business too. There are several different ways you can implement training into your business, from carrying out extra one-to-one meetings to share your own knowledge, investing in a professional instructor, or sending your staff on a course. Whichever method you choose, you are likely to drive more sales and ultimately profit in your business. Here are just some of the top reasons why you should provide training for your employees.
Statistics Don’t Lie
If you are not willing to invest in your staff and provide them with training, it is likely that they will leave your organisation as they won’t feel valued. Two out of three workers have admitted that they changed jobs due to a lack of training and development opportunities. It is important to identify the development needs of your employees. Are they needing to expand their skills so that they have more chance of being promoted within the company? It is actually more cost-effective as a business to invest in your current staff, as otherwise they will leave and you will be faced with recruitment expenses instead.
Benefits Of Training
Productivity is another good reason to give your staff more training. If they are given new practical skills which are relevant to their roles, they will be able to carry out tasks quicker. Training doesn’t have to be directly related to the role of your employees either. Have you installed some new software within the business recently that your staff would benefit from learning how to use?
Upskilling and reskilling is a growing trend, particularly during lockdown when people have more time than usual to take on additional training. Instead of hiring someone new to carry out a role, have a think about your current team. Is there anyone that might flourish in a new role, who has already proven that they are an asset to your business?
Do My Staff Need Training?
This is a difficult question to answer, but the first thing to look at is your staff retention rate. If it is clear that there is a revolving door policy when it comes to staff, you need to spend time investigating why. It might not be training related, it could be due to the rates of pay. However, if your staff turnover rate is high, this is likely to be linked with not giving them the opportunity to grow and advance within the business.
Another way to establish whether or not you are providing an adequate level of training is to run an assessment, and actually ask your staff! This can be in the form of a survey, or you could always bring someone in externally to monitor their behaviour and performance.
Conclusion
So whether you have ongoing training in place for your employees, or need to implement some within your business, you should always be looking for ways to help develop your staff.
