Deadlines, some people like having them so that they can put pressure on themselves to get work done. However, the vast majority of people despise them and will avoid having them at all if possible.

If you are in that majority and looking to do a training course to help you progress in your career or even start a new career, it’s fairly unlikely that you would want that added pressure of a deadline on top of your existing work commitments. Now imagine, you are on a training course that has a deadline AND if you don’t finish before that deadline, then you will have to pay more money to be able to complete your course… Does this kind of training really have you, the learner in mind? Or, is it just money motivated?

The sad thing is, the scenario of having training courses with deadlines and course extension fees isn’t a made up one. We appreciate that flexible online learning isn’t for everyone, which is why there are courses out there with weekly classroom-based sessions which tend to have set end dates. But at Brooks and Kirk, we have found that learners will produce work that is of a much higher standard if they aren’t weighed down with the pressure of meeting deadlines. 

If you have spoken to us on the phone about any of our courses, or even just had a look around our Assessor Training website, you will probably have noticed that one of the unique features of our courses, is that we have no set start and end dates. Meaning, you can start on your course as soon as you like and take however long you need to complete it.  

When it comes down to choosing a training provider, just bare that earlier question in mind; would this course be centred around me, or my money? We are more than happy to give anyone advice on what to look out for when choosing the right training provider, obviously starting with avoiding courses with extension fees!

The Micro-Teach – The Way it Should be Done

I’m guessing most of you arriving at this article will have heard of the PTLLS Award before. Hopefully by now, most of you will also have discovered that the PTLLS Award was replaced by the Level 3 Award in Education and Training back in 2014. Whilst the qualification title is completely different, not so much changed with the qualification itself. 

There is still just one competency based part of this course, that is the micro-teach. A significant amount of providers promote the fact that learners who complete the Award in Education and Training with them can deliver their micro-teach via Skype. Whilst it may sound appealing to complete the entire course online, this article will outline exactly why you should only consider these courses as an absolute last resort. 

If you are familiar with the Level 3 AET, then you will already be aware of what is involved with the micro-teach unit (Understanding and Using Inclusive Teaching and Learning Approaches in Education and Training). But for all of you that aren’t familiar with the level 3 Education and Training Award, this unit requires you to deliver a 15 minute micro-teach on a subject of your choice. As this is the only competency based part of the qualification, we believe that it is extremely important for you, the student teacher to get the opportunity to deliver a lesson in front of a small group of people and interact directly with your learners.

When you think that as a result of gaining this qualification, you could secure a job as a tutor in a further education college, it should be a requirement for the only competency based unit to be observed in person as oppose to through Skype. However, as it doesn’t state that in the specification, companies can get away with delivering the entire qualification online.  But if you are going to enrol onto a training course, then you want to gain the relevant skills and knowledge on completion of that course. We believe that it would be extremely difficult for you, as the learner to gain the necessary teaching skills from delivering a 15 minute lesson to a webcam. 

That is why, with Brooks and Kirk, you would work through all of the knowledge based content on our online learning system and then just attend one day at your closest centre. On the day that you attend, you will deliver your micro-teach to a small group (generally 4-6 people) and give feedback to your classmates on their micro-teaches. You may be thinking, ‘Oh well, it is only 15 minutes. How much can you really learn in 15 minutes anyway?‘ But the answer is, an unbelievable amount!

Dan has observed hundreds and hundreds of nervous people deliver their micro-teaches and whilst they feel like they are going to hate the experience, a good 9 out of 10 people feel incredible when they come to the end of their lesson. In fact, we aren’t lying when we say that the majority of people end up enjoying it so much, that they want to do it all over again! We have spoken to learners who have done their micro-teaches online and they have told us that they didn’t get that same kind of feeling.

What a Year!

Let’s have a quick recap of 2015; there was the birth of a new royal baby, England broke records for being terrible at Rugby and Jeremy Clarkson suddenly became ‘un-busy’.

However, more importantly, 2015 also saw a massive increase in uptake of our assessor courses. So before we briefly take you through our eventful 2015, we would just like to say a massive thank you to all of you that made our year what it was!

Hope your well. I just wanted to say thank you to you and all the trainers at Brooks and Kirk that have helped me on my learning journey. When I first started out on my courses in Assessing and Education and Training, I really wasn’t sure if I would be able to do it. Earning for Referring

Towards the end of 2015, we discovered that the majority of people who were starting a course with us were referred to us by a friend, family member or work colleague.

So, because our learners were being so kind and referring us to others, we thought that we would repay the generosity and offer a £50 referral fee to anybody who refers somebody onto our course.

We are still running this earning for referring offer, so if you have referred somebody to us or know somebody that is interested in training to become an assessor, then make sure you fill in their details on our referral form to get your £50 referral fee!

To be honest, we’re surprised it took this long to receive a CertSelfie from one of our learners with any kind of pet. But considering we are all dog lovers here at Brooks and Kirk, the winner of January’s CertSelfie of the month was an easy choice!

Steve Kirk

Let me tell you something about me. Prior to joining Brooks and Kirk I worked for the United Nation peacekeeping force, spending 5 years in Sierra Leone and a further two years in the Sudan. Prior to this, I served with the 1st Battalion, Parachute Regiment (1 Para). This role took me across most of the Middle East and Africa. Both of these roles came after a long period of illness where I had to be treated for a condition known as “compulsive liar”, a condition that thankfully I no longer suffer with. 

Alternatively, I have spent the last 10 years here at Brooks and Kirk. During that time I have predominantly been involved in training assessors and IQA’s. Quality control is something that I feel very strongly about,  focussing on ensuring the quality of the learning experience not just passing qualifications.

Hello. My name is Laura and I am addicted to shopping and the gym. Oh, sorry….. This is not the self-help page. So let me tell you a bit more about myself.

After leaving sixth form, I went on to do a degree in Accounting and Finance. Since then, I have gone on to become an Assessor and an IQA at Brooks and Kirk. I am also involved in Apprenticeship delivery and managed to be ‘volunteered’ to deliver functional skills. I am occupationally competent to assess in areas such as; business administration, customer service, marketing and health and social care. As much as I enjoy assessing learners in all these areas, I suppose you could say training up NVQ assessors is my forte. I will ensure that it’s not a case of ‘you’ve done just enough’ to pass your assessor course. I will ensure that you gain the necessary knowledge and develop the skills you need to become a quality assessor.

Dan Kirk

Hi I am Dan. I am the primary developer for the Brooks and Kirk virtual Learning systems including web maintenance and resource design. I am a secondary school trained ICT and Computer Science teacher mainly teaching in a school with high social deprivation. I joined Brooks and Kirk in 2014 and am now the main dogs-body for anything IT related. And yes, I do have to say “Have you switched it off and on again?” If you have any questions relating to the learning systems, I am the primary point of contact. If there is anything relating to, “who is your electrical supplier?” “Who provides your business insurance?”etc.….”nah… not my department mate”.
