What Assessor Qualification Do I Need To Become An Assessor?
You have decided to go down the career path of becoming an assessor. But what assessor qualification do you need to become an assessor?
The role of an assessor is to assess a learner’s abilities, to enable them to gain their qualifications. Therefore, you should not only hold an assessor qualificatiom, but you should be competent within the sector you are assessing in.
What assessor qualification do I need?
You will need the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement. This is also called ‘CAVA’ for short.
The CAVA assessor qualification used to be called the:

The CAVA assessor qualification allows you to assess learners both in the classroom and in their workplace. It is the most highly regarded assessor qualification and the one most looked for by employers.
I say most highly regarded because there are actually 3 other assessor qualifications.
- Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement (AVRA)
- Qualifies you to assess in learning environments, such as colleges, and workshops.
- Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment (ACWE)
- Qualifies you to assess in the workplace.
- Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment (UPPA)
- A knowledge-based assessor qualification that does not qualify you to practice as an assessor.
Nonetheless, the one you need to know about is CAVA. The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) is the only up-to-date assessor qualification that fully qualifies you to assess. With this assessor qualification, you can become an assessor in the work environment and in the learning environment. It is most sought after by employers.
