Becoming a Health and Social Care Assessor – Are you a Sally?
Have you been working in Health and Social Care for many years? Getting tired and worn out from long hours and strenuous work? Maybe you want to stick to what you know with regards to the industry but just take a few steps back; here’s how you can become a Health and Social Care Assessor like Sally.
Are you a Sally?
Sally is a 56-year-old, mum of four. She has 4 sons as well as 3 grandchildren. All 3 grandchildren are under 4 years of age. The majority of her spare time is devoted to looking after her grandchildren; Sally loves being a nanny but also having a catch up with her sons.
Sally, like the rest of us, has to pay the bills. In order to do that, it consists of her doing 4 lots of 12-hour shifts a week! She works both weekdays and weekends in a care home, as a care assistant. Being a care assistant can be very demanding and tiring. This is all she has ever known, as Sally has been working as a care assistant for 38 years, starting out at the age of 18.
As well as bringing up four children, she also gained her Level 3 Health and Social Care NVQ Now Sally is looking to slow down and cut down her working hours as she gets older. She just wants to spend more time with her family and friends. Who wouldn’t want to do that?
Becoming a Health and Social Care Assessor
Whilst searching online for new job opportunities, Sally saw a lot of job adverts for ‘Health and Social Care Assessors’. She decided to do a bit more research into what a Health and Social Care Assessor was, and what they do. After reading a few different adverts, Sally thought it sounded perfect for her. It was fewer hours, but still keeps her in the sector she loves working in.
One thing that was holding Sally back was the fact she wasn’t a qualified assessor. Every single job advert said she needed the TAQA. Sally started to research the TAQA course, but it turns out TAQA itself wasn’t a course but a suite of qualifications. This was explained by a course advisor at Brooks and Kirk.
The Assessing Life
The assessing life is a lot less hectic than when Sally was a carer. She now gets to pick and choose her days off work and doesn’t have to work weekends! This is all thanks to the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement; this gave her the qualification to become a Health and Social Care Assessor.
Now she goes out and visits learners who are working towards their Level 3’s in Health and Social Care. Sally loves the fact she’s giving something back to the younger generation, and sharing all her knowledge and experience with them from over the years when she worked as a carer.
Another bonus is the fact she still regularly visits the care home she used to work in, as some of her learners work there and she gets to see some familiar faces.
